In this project, a solar panel was designed and created using individual solar cells soldered together and encased in epoxy. The solar panel is rated for 5V and up to 2.5A with ten cells soldered in series, each cell rated for 500mV and 2.5A or 1.25W. The motivation was to have a handy solar panel that can charge 5V electronics such as smartphones and battery banks.
Rough draft of the layout and dimensions of the solar panel.
Solar cells laid out before soldering.
One column of solar cells soldered together in series.
Once operation was verified, solar cells were encased in an epoxy frame.
